Can i darken boxed hair dye?

ok so i have a box of hair dye and its too light and i dont have money to buy a better one or the receipt to return it..is there a way to darken it? i also dont want any stupid answers like adding paint. and i dont want it to ruin my hair. is there a SAFE way to do this?
