Does dyeing your hair damage it?

I'm a redhead and I have blue-ish gray eyes. I don't really like having red hair due to the fact that I look like Ron Weasley from the HP series.... I also have an English accent so that kinda makes it worse... I have a brown-ish red color and I absolutely HATE it. So I was thinking about dying it blonde. Would that look weird? Would it damage my hair?
